THE USE OF ICT IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ORAL ENGLISH IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to use of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English in Nsukka Education Zone with a particular reference to selected secondary schools in Nsukka Education Zone. To achieve this objective, four research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The data was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected with the help of a well-structured questionnaire of two sections administered to the selected secondary schools in Nsukka Education Zone.
The collected data were analyzed using simple percentages and tables to analyze research questions while Chi-Square Statistical method was used in testing the research hypotheses. A structured questionnaire was used as the major instrument for data collection from the selected secondary schools in Nsukka Education Zone. After the careful analysis of the data, the following findings were revealed that; ICT does have positive impact in teaching and learning of oral English and there are problems associated with the use and implementation of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English. The study concluded with some recommendations that teachers should upgrade and familiarize themselves in the use and application of ICT facilities in the acquisition of language education.
CHAPTER 1
1.1 Background of the Study
The English language is not indigenous to Nigeria. Yet, it is studied and used in Nigeria more actively than most of the indigenous languages. The English language is Nigeria’s second language but many parents prefer their children speaking English to their indigenous languages. In some primary schools, English is used as the medium of communication. Whoever speaks indigenous languages is made to pay some money or is severely punished.
In some secondary schools, the same thing is observed. Nigerian tertiary institutions are not left out in the wide spread use of English. The work places cannot but be mentioned. Our aged parents who are half-educated or did not attend any school still hunger and thirst for the English language.
No wonder, Bamgbose (1971) asserts, “Of all heritage left behind in Nigeria by the British at the end of the colonial administration, probably none is more important than the English language”.
If this is the case, the Nigerian users of English should aim at pronouncing English words in a way that brings out their messages best without altering the language to the extent that its value as a medium of communication will be lost. Where this foundation is laid is in the lower levels of education; nursery, primary and post primary schools.
Globalization and technological changes are processes that have accelerated teaching. The past fifteen years have created a new global economy “powered by technology, fuelled by information and driven by knowledge”. The Emergence of this new global economy has serious implications for the nature and purpose of educational institutions. As the half life of information continuous to shrinks and access to information continues to grow exponentially. School cannot remain more vociferous mission of a prescribed set of information. Information and Communication Technology ICT’ which includes radio, television, computers and the internet has been found as potentially powerful. Communication technology is the tool use to harvest the information properly for effectives in any Area of life.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
A lot of stakeholders in the educational sector has expressed sincere feelings about the decline of the value of education, the decay in the training of manpower, laxity in the teaching and learning and lack of educational materials in the ministry of education.
1. Some schools are lacking in the implementation of the ICT in teaching and learning.
2. Some school due to lack of fund they cannot purchased ICT equipments for effective teaching and learning.
3. Some teachers are not well trained to use ICT in carrying out their duty is the class.
4. Because of the lack of quality, teachers adulterate the student thereby creating barrier in learning and development of the student. This is the right of researcher to study school in Nsukka education zone with the aim of finding out whether they have implemented the use of ICT and record the success but if not know the cause of it.
1.3 Significant of the Study
This study is very essential to use extent that it helps to identify the impact of information and communication technology on the teaching and leaving of oral English. The researcher expected that if the suggested and personal opinions proposed in this research work are implemented effectively and diligently, the poor image of information and communication technology on the teaching and learning of oral English will be restored and the objective of the introduction of information and communication technology will be achieved. Thus the research work will be of benefit to the following group of people, Government, parents, society, schools and students of English language.
1.4 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to find out the obstacles teachers face in using ICT and whether it has any positive impact in teaching and learning of oral English specifically, the study aims at finding out the following.
1) To examine the extent do teachers face in using ICT in teaching and learning of oral English.
2) To determine the extent have the society and government recognize the significance of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English.
3) To examine whether ICT have any positive impact in teaching and learning of oral English.
4) To what extent are the problems associated with the use and implementation of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English.
1.5 Research Questions
As a result of the clear statement of the purpose of the research, the following vital research questions are raised to help guide the study,
1) To what extent do teachers face in using ICT in teaching and learning of oral English?
2) To what extent have the society and government recognize the significance of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English?
3) Does ICT have any positive impact in teaching and learning of oral English?
4) What are the problems associated with the use and implementation of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English?
1.6 Hypotheses
i. ICT does not have positive impact in teaching and learning of oral English.
ii. There are no problems associated with the use and implementation of ICT in teaching and learning of oral English.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is cover all the secondary school in Nsukka Education Zone. It tries to delimit the study, that is to point out the extent or how far the study will go.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
There is no study undertaken by a researcher that is perfect. The imperfection of any research is always due to some factors negatively affecting a researcher in the course of carrying out research. Therefore, time constraint has shown no mercy to the researcher. The limited time has to be shared among many alternative uses, which includes reading, attending lectures and writing of this research, also distance and its attendant costs of travelling to obtain information which may enhance the writing of this study was a major limitation.
